Cholesterol Tips and Lifestyle Changes
Cholesterol is a substance produced naturally by your liver. We also get cholesterol from what we eat. Products such as red meat, poultry, fish and dairy products all contain cholesterol. Your body needs cholesterol to help insulate nerves, make cell membranes, and produce certain hormones. And, since the body creates cholesterol, you don’t need any more from your diet.
LDL cholesterol
LDL is the “bad” cholesterol - LDL stands for low density lipoprotein; the LDL carries cholesterol to the arteries.
HDL cholesterol
HDL is the “good cholesterol - HDL stands for high density lipoprotein; the HDL carries cholesterol away from the arteries to the liver and out of the body.
Tips for changing your lifestyle include:
- Reduce or eliminate coffee from your diet. Even decaffeinated coffee and regular coffee have been linked to elevated cholesterol levels.
- Stop smoking. Smoking puts toxic levels of contaminants in your body which effects literally every organ and your entire being.
- Get physically active. If you don’t exercise, start with a daily walk. Experts recommend at least 20-30 minutes per day in some form of exercise.
- Drink more water. Choose natural spring water and avoid distilled and/or purified water. Distilled and purified waters leach minerals out of your system. Experts recommend 8-10 glasses of water every day.
